Today in American History…Sarah Polk was Born

Sarah Childress Polk was born today in 1803 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. During her tenure as First Lady, Mrs. Polk was known by the nickname of “Sahara Sarah” (people said it was that she was as “dry as the desert”) because she was an incredibly sober, deeply religious woman and did not allow there to be any drinking, dancing or card-playing at any White House social functions. She also was the very first First Lady to host a Thanksgiving dinner and lived in the White House when gas lighting was installed and also…an ice box!
