We made Mrs Robert E Lee’s gingerbread cookies in the shop today using the old family recipe in her great-geandsugher’s wonderful cookbook,  So excited to taste a piece of history.

Our “Taste a Piece of History” is so exciting and our customers really love being able to eat something that our ancestors once enjoyed. I’m often asked “what is next week’s historical recipe going to be?”

 

It has been a long couple of days and we are headed into what is going to be our busiest times of the year.  At last count, we have 9 pies, 4 cakes, a dozen cookies and 4 sets of dinner rolls due by Wednesday.  We are so thankful for our customers and for them entrusting is with making a part of their special Thanksgiving meals 😊

Thank you all for another successful week on the books for us.  I enjoy EVERY single one of you that I encounter when you walk through the front door ❤️

We made a delicious Sally Lunn bread for our historical recipe this week.  Sally Lunn bread was extremely popular in the 1700’s and 1800’s.

 

We always meet the most wonderful people here at the shop.  Jerry and Jodie got married tonight at Hotel Strasburg and it was so wonderful seeing them this morning when they came in for breakfast with their dear friends, Kris and Steve. We wish you all the best, Jerry and Jodie! May you have a lifetime full of love and happiness ❤️❤️❤️

Here are some pictures from the Ribbon Cutting ceremony from last night.  So thankful to our Mayor for coming out along with the members of the Chamber of Commerce. Tomorrow evening is our official grand opening with the ribbon cutting at 5:30PM.  Two months ago today I began this journey when we first opened the doors on September 1st.  I look back and it seems so long ago! I have learned so much in the past few weeks – personally and professionally.  I just want to publicly say thank you to my family and to my friends (you know who you are) who are just continuously there for me especially on days/nights that I feel as if I’m a three legged dog going up a hill (this new life is exhausting!)  I am an American. Not an Ameri-can’t 👍🇺🇸

My dad making his delicious New England Corn Chowder this morning. He is with me nearly every day at the bakery and has been by my side since we opened (and the weeks before). It’s so wonderful to spend these days with my father and I’m so thankful for his love and strength (and laughter!)

We has a fabulously busy weekend! Thank you to those who have come in to visit with us.  It’s so nice to meet people like Franklin and his lovely wife (childhood sweethearts) and to share stories with one another.  I feel as if I meet new friends every day at the shop!

Yesterday we had a wonderful couple come in from Alabama.  They invited my friend Jak to sit with them since he was alone and they learned that they had similar backgrounds.

Last week I met a fabulous gent from Ireland.  Ireland! And he just so happened to stop into the shop and drink coffee, chat a bit…so wonderful!

Thank you for the plant, John. Oh and thanks for mailing my pie plate back and the kind note    that you sent me.

My old pal, Joe and his wife Cindy came in to have lunch today. What a special treat to visit with them 😊

My fellow citizens in my small town of Strasburg have been so kind, welcoming and supportive since we’ve opened the door last month for the first time.

Its Sunday evening and my feet are tired but it’s a good tired! I’m so excited about the upcoming week at the shop and meeting with you all again.

We made Mary Todd Lincoln’s cake today at the bakery. It’s a very simple recipe to make (compared to something like Martha Washigton’s Great Cake!) and our customers really enjoy it. It’s so neat to be able to “taste history” and especially taste something that Abraham Lincoln enjoyed eating.

Here is the recipe:

Mary Todd Lincoln’s White Cake
(Recipe from Lincoln’s Table by Donna D. McCreary was adapted by Janice Cooke Newman)

1 cup blanched almonds, chopped in a food processor until they resemble a coarse flour
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup milk
6 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
confectionary sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a Bundt cake pan.

Cream butter and sugar. Sift flour and baking powder 3 times. Add to creamed butter and sugar, alternating with milk. Stir in almonds and beat well.

Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into the batter. Stir in vanilla extract.

Pour into prepared pan and bake for 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Turn out on a wire rack and cool. When cool, sift confectionary sugar over top

A basic white frosting sprinkled with almonds was also popular.

It’s always so nice when old friends come by to see me at the shop 😊 Jak and I had been co-workers and good friends during the last few years of my tenure at the Pentagon.  Gosh I missed him! Was so good to spend time with him today.

The lovely ladies of Stony Pointe came by to have their monthly luncheon with us today.  What a fabulous time we had with them! Thank you for supporting us. I hope to see you all again soon.

After the wonderful luncheon, my mom and dad-in-law as well as my husband and I baked the entire afternoon together.  My MIL made her wonderful sugar cookies and my hubby assisted her with cutting up veggies for her potato corn chowder.  My FIL made his delicious “Grandpa Mac” fudge.  I made…lots and lots of cupcakes.  What a wonderful day of family bonding in the bakery ❤️ and one I will treasure for always.

Here is my father-in-law enjoying a gigantic cookie from the shop.  One of our best sellers in the bakery are our chocolate chip cookies and our oatmeal raisin cookies 🍪

We made Mary Todd Lincoln’s cake at the bakery today  – using the same recipe that she once used years ago.  We refer to it as “courting cake” because she made it when she was being courted by Abraham Lincoln in their early 1840’s.

Joyce has a great time making cookies 🍪 Even made a special cookie for how she was feeling today 😂

We also had margarita cupcakes – made with real tequila!

We had spaghetti and meatballs for a special and wow – we had a great lunch turnout! Need to serve spaghetti more often! Cindy’s homemade garlic butter was a huge hit too 👍

Did we mention that we have fresh out of the oven pumpkin scones with spiced icing? Oh my goodness they are yummy!! 😳

We’ve been baking like crazy! Cindy’s bread is fully stocked for the week. She has made all kinds (pumkin and sweet potato are my favorite!) and we have fresh out of the oven white breads and rolls 🍞

Our cupcakes for the week are: Candy Corn, Red Velvet, Chocolate, Carrot Cake and Strawberry.  We also have a huge assortment of  yummy cookies and have Sweet Potato Cake with Maple Icing and of course our most popular cake, Hummingbird Cake, is available too 😊

Had a very busy and productive day. Cindy made a boatload of breads (love the Cheesy Beer Jalepeno one!) and Joyce fixed the icky soup warmer with alot of elbow grease and prayers haha!
