Today in American history…Our 36th US President, Lyndon Johnson, was born on a farm near Stonewall, Texas.

Some of his lifetime accomplishments were:

***Elected to the US House of Representatives in 1937. His time in office was interrupted due to his service in WWII. He signed up for the Navy and won the Silver Star for bravery. Upon arriving home, he continued his service in the House until 1948 when he was elected and became a US Senator representing Texas.
***Became the US Senate’s Minority Leader in 1953.
***Became the US Senate’s Majority Leader in 1954.
***Selected and nominated as John F Kennedy’s Vice Presidential running mate in 1960.
***Became the US Vice President in 1961
***When President Kennedy died on November 22, 1963, President Johnson was sworn in as our Nation’s 36th US President.
***Officially elected to the Presidency by the American people in 1964.

As President, a few of his notable accomplishments were:

Created and pushed through legislation to create Medicare/Medicaid, Head Start, The Voting Rights Act and The Civil Rights Act.

Today in American history…The Lincoln–Douglas debates began on August 21, 1858. They were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln (Republican Party candidate for the US Senate from Illinois) and the incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas (the Democratic Party candidate). The main issue discussed in all seven debates was slavery in the United States and focused particularly on slavery’s future expansion into new US territories.

Today in American History…former First Lady Rosalynn Carter was born on August 18, 1927 in Plains, Georgia. She married Jimmy Carter on July 7, 1946 and he would eventually be our 39th US President (1977-1981).

Today in American history…former First Lady Edith Roosevelt was born on August 6, 1861 in Norwich, Connecticut. She was married to our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt.

Today in American History…Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was born on July 28, 1929 in Southampton, New York.

Today in American history…Emmett Till was born on July 25, 1941 in Webb, Mississippi. He died at the tender age of fourteen on August 28, 1955 in Money, MS. He was brutally beaten and lynched.

One of the most defining and important books that I’ve read in my lifetime was written by his beloved mother, Death of Innocence. If you ever have a chance to read it I highly recommend it.

His life should always be remembered and cherished. His name should never be forgotten.

Today in American history…Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on July 22, 1890 in Boston, Massachussettes.

Today in American history…Lizzie Borden was born on July 19, 1860 in Fall River, Massachussettes. Her murder trial (and then acquittal) was one of the most infamous trials in American history. What are your thoughts? Was she guilty? Innocent?
