Today in American history…The Lincoln–Douglas debates began on August 21, 1858. They were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln (Republican Party candidate for the US Senate from Illinois) and the incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas (the Democratic Party candidate). The main issue discussed in all seven debates was slavery in the United States and focused particularly on slavery’s future expansion into new US territories.
